Going on Hiatus…

TW: Mentions of depression, disordered eating, weight gain/loss

Hello readers and fellow bloggers,

I regrettably will be taking the next month (or more) off from blogging. YouTube videos will be a bit sporadic when/if they do go up. There are several reasons for this, and in an effort to be transparent, I’ll go over what I can with you all.

Firstly, my mental health is not where I need it to be. Going on vacation felt like a great escape from current events but returning has made me feel even more depressed. This makes sense as we were put in a bubble of feeling “normal” and now that we’re back home and self-isolating again, things aren’t close to normal for us yet. I’ve been talking this over with my therapist, and I may be seeking a change in medication again with my doctor if I don’t get some relief soon. The depression is affecting my work and home life balance. Household chores, walking the dogs, etc. all seem to be too daunting to tackle, and I can’t muster the motivation to create or write either.

Spoilers! Going on a (socially distanced) Vacation

Spoilers! Going on a (socially distanced) Vacation

The last time I went on a proper vacation was back when Alec and I went on our Disney honeymoon in 2019. We have been overdue for some time away, but with the pandemic still going on, we had to pick somewhere that wasn’t full of people and didn’t require getting on an airplane. So we booked a cabin out in Tennessee that has amazing views, nature trails, and plenty of things to do that will help us continue to be safe and socially distant. I can’t wait to recharge and enjoy nature with my partner and our pups.

With that being said, the blog and my social media accounts will be taking a break while I enjoy my vacation with my family. I hope all of you are taking some time to rest and recharge as well as we continue to navigate through current events! I’ll see you when I’m back on May 5th!

Spoilers! Taking a Holiday Break

Spoilers! Taking a Holiday Break Every year at about this time, I take a break from this wonderful blog of mine to focus on my family and friends. Right now, I’m probably chilling with a cup of hot chocolate in front of a lit Christmas tree in a cozy robe. Now that that relaxing image is in your mind, I want to let you know that A Geeky Gal is on a holiday break until December 29th. I will be back on December 30th with a look at 2020’s blog and personal resolutions. I hope all of you have an amazing holiday season with your family and friends! See you in a week!

Spoilers! We Bought A House During the Pandemic!

Spoilers! We Bought A House During the Pandemic!

Wow. It’s been awhile since I’ve sat down to write a post like this. I promised my Patrons forever ago to write about how we bought our home during the Corona Virus pandemic, and things have finally calmed down enough for me to talk about it. This was one crazy ride y’all. I’ll do my best to break it down, because this tale is full of setbacks, small wins, and more setbacks. No worries though; we are in our new home and making things work while the pandemic continues. So grab a snack and settle in for my tale of how my partner and I bought our first house and the silly stories that come with what should have been a pretty straight forward (but exciting) time in our lives.

Finding “the One”

Every “How to Buy Your First Home” guide tells you to find your budget, figure out your must haves, find a realtor, get approved for your home loan, etc. Some guides might even warn you that you’ll have to compromise or make sacrifices to find a home that you’ll love. What it doesn’t prepare you for is shopping for a house in a pandemic.

Housing prices crept up and up, even though we had thought they would surely fall based on the job loss and state of the economy in the US. Houses were not staying on the market longer than a day or two. Bidding wars were becoming normal. In fact, the first house that we decided to put an offer on had over 25 other offers. We went $20,000 over asking price and still walked away without a house.

But I’m getting a little ahead of myself here. Let’s start with what our wish list consisted of for our first home. This list was based off our experiences in the rental home we had been in for the past three years that was three small bedrooms with one bath (and my year or so of living in an apartment complex in a two bedroom, one bath with the crappiest neighbors known to man) and where we saw/see ourselves in the next 5 to 7 years. Then, I’ll break down what our first home actually had.
