Sorry it’s been so quiet around here! The wedding wore me out, work has been crazy busy, and now the holidays are right around the corner. Can time slow down please? Anyway, I thought I’d tell all of you some of my favorite things this week that have been occupying my time. MCFT posts are usually 4 or 5 things that I’m loving this week! Here’s 4 things I am loving right now!
Spyro Reignited Trilogy
If you haven’t read my post that is part of The Games That Define Us, you totally should. And of course read the others that are up so far! There’s some really amazing posts this month and I can’t wait to read the rest. Back to Spyro Reignited Trilogy… My wonderful husband knew how much I wanted the new remastered Spyro trilogy, so, of course, he bought it and installed it as soon as he could and I beat the first game in 6 hours. Be on the look out for a Saturday Suggestion featuring the remastered favorite game of my childhood.

About 20 years ago, I was 5 years old in Gulf Shores celebrating Christmas with my mom and grandma. I awoke to a big box in the middle of our beach rental home’s living room. After opening my Pokemon cards with a sweet note from Santa, I finally asked about the big box. My mom was really excited for me to tear into it, and I was just excited over how big it seemed. At the bottom of the giant box was a PlayStation with two controllers and two video games: Spyro the Dragon and Frogger.
Absolutely beside myself with joy, my mom and grandma set up the PlayStation and gathered around while I put in Spyro. I had played a little bit of Mortal Kombat and Sonic the Hedgehog on Sega Genesis, but watching the screen fill with that purple dragon and all his glory was something I couldn’t forget. My mom and grandma took turns playing and my little heart was so full and amazed.
Later that day, we took turns playing against each other in Frogger. The top down game was different than anything I had played before, but it didn’t compare to the world of Spyro the Dragon. I played and played Spyro until my thumbs hurt. I played and played until I finally beat it. What a bittersweet feeling it was to beat the game that opened my eyes to gaming and becoming a gamer.
Years later, I sat down to play Spyro again, this time on my PlayStation 3. I played and played and played… until I beat it again. This time at 100% completion. The same bittersweet feeling came over me, but also a sense of accomplishment. I had beaten my first childhood game at 100%.
Spyro will forever hold a special place in my heart. It made me into a gamer; it made me want to go into gaming as a career. It took me to another world when I needed to get away; it challenged me in ways I didn’t expect. Here’s to you Spyro. May we see you again soon!
