VGC Day 16: What open-world game gave you that “woah” feeling?

VGC Day 16: What open-world game gave you that “woah” feeling?

I tend to be a #patientgamer, but there was one game I was definitely not going to wait for. After much hype and some money saved up, I ran out to my nearest GameStop to purchase Skyrim for the PS3 as soon as it hit the shelves.

The first time I was dumped into that horse drawn wagon in Skyrim and sentenced to beheading, I was pretty excited. I made my character, watched everyone run from the dragon, but it was only after the tutorial that I realized how insanely vast Skyrim was. Just look at those graphics, I said to myself. I had a newfound appreciation for models as well since I was in college for 3D modeling/game art and Skyrim seemed to scratch that artist itch for me.

I easily spent the better part of 5 hours just exploring. And I can say that here recently I finished the main story line on PS4, but honestly, the world is so amazing and beautiful that I just kept exploring places and talking to people (hello to the numerous misc quests). Skyrim is also the only game I have bought 3 times. PS3, PS4, and recently PC. If you love open worlds, fantasy, and RPG’s, Skyrim will give you that “woah” feeling on your first play through.

I am probably going to get a lot of hate for this one. It is one of the most popular games and is still coming out with sequels. In fact, a new title was released in October 2017. That game is…

Assassin’s Creed.

I will be completely honest with you guys. I wanted to love this game. In fact, I bought three of the first AC games on PS3 for myself. I was excited. There was already a lot of love for the series, and I was far behind in #patientgamer land. Unfortunately, I only put about 4 or 5 hours into the first game and never touched the rest.

It seemed like every city was a “rinse and repeat” of the last city. Same missions. Same people. Same bullshit. The controls were so wonky that I was constantly accidentally jumping or scaling walls and mounting horses when I was trying to hide. The AI are incredibly stupid in that you can’t finish a mission because they’re stuck in a crowd and move just an inch too close to the guards, BOOM, desynchronized! And don’t get me started on the difficult missions. Combined with the crap controls makes it impossible to finish anything.

AC could have been incredible. In fact, I really liked the story line, exotic locations and time periods. But the fact remains that I couldn’t finish the game due to so many errors on the developers end. Since I never finished the first game, I haven’t even looked at the rest (and there’s a lot out now).
