Saturday Suggestion – Game: Kingdom Hearts Series

An action RPG has done the impossible: marrying Disney and Final Fantasy. Being a huge Disney fan, and just getting my feet wet with Final Fantasy, I was super interested in picking up this game. The tale of Kingdom Hearts is a wholesome one, though a bit complicated. Simply put, it’s the “story of Light overcoming Darkness with the power of Friendship.” — A Geeky Gal (Video Game Challenge Day 28)

VGC Day 28: What is your favorite game series?

VGC Day 28: What is your favorite game series?

Finally, a post that I have wanted to write for ages! And one game that has yet to get its own Saturday Suggestion. One of my all time favorite game series is Kingdom Hearts. I fell head over heels for the first game. It’s been a bit of an obsession since then.

An action RPG has done the impossible: marrying Disney and Final Fantasy. Being a huge Disney fan, and just getting my feet wet with Final Fantasy, I was super interested in picking up this game. The tale of Kingdom Hearts is a wholesome one, though a bit complicated. Simply put, it’s the “story of Light overcoming Darkness with the power of Friendship.”

The first game follows Sora, a keyblade wielder, Donald, and Goofy as they travel to Disney worlds to stop the Heartless invasion by sealing each world’s keyhole. While the controls are a bit wonky and the story is a little hard to follow at first, I quickly got the hang of it and finished the game with tears in my eyes. I knew there would be a sequel so I just held in there as best as I could (because for real that ending was heart breaking but powerful and I just LOVED it).

The later games fix a lot of the game play issues that the first game encountered and the story becomes much more complex. KH has a huge fan following, and there’s tons of videos that help break the story down if you’re having trouble. Overall, the story is fantastic and one of my favorites as far as action RPGs go.

Kingdom Hearts is an amazing story about friendship and the power of good. It has a steady flow of hack and slash with a bit of magic, Final Fantasy story-telling, and whole lot of Disney. You can explore so many Disney worlds with Donald and Goofy fighting by your side while you save your favorite characters and even enlist them for help later in the game.

Kingdom Hearts is a must for all Disney/Final Fantasy fans. Just be forgiving with the very first game. We all start somewhere.

VGC Day 5: What is your guilty pleasure game?

VGC Day 5: What is your guilty pleasure game?

I picked up Final Fantasy X-2 after a friend highly recommended it. I had never played Final Fantasy X (yes, I know, terrible!) but was eager to try it out as I had never played a turn based RPG before. Needless to say, now I find myself passing over these kind of games in favor for regular RPGs, BUT FFX-2 does have a special place in my heart. It’s one of my guilty pleasure games.

Final Fantasy X-2 drew me in for one reason: that amazing opening sequence. Anyone else download that song? I’m pretty sure I still have it on an MP3 player somewhere. I would restart the game just for that opening (and I did). And that outfit she’s wearing! (Spoiler: it was the songstress dress sphere.) Who didn’t want to cosplay that?!

My second favorite thing about FFX-2? The dress spheres. I won’t lie. I bought a guide book just to see how cool I could make Yuna, Rikku, and Pain. My favorite dress sphere was definitely the gunner, purely for aesthetic reasons. The coolest dress sphere though was Yuna’s Floral Fallal. As a 13 year old girl, I spent many weekends drawing up my own dress spheres and dreaming about what they could do.

I didn’t play FFX-2 for the story. I played it to get into as many battles as possible, which was pretty easy considering every time you walked a few feet you were in one. Maybe I could have gotten more into the story had I played Final Fantasy X first. Yuna is a pretty bad ass chick though, and I loved playing a trio of awesome women. Maybe I’ll dig it back out and give the story another try.
