Going on Hiatus…

TW: Mentions of depression, disordered eating, weight gain/loss

Hello readers and fellow bloggers,

I regrettably will be taking the next month (or more) off from blogging. YouTube videos will be a bit sporadic when/if they do go up. There are several reasons for this, and in an effort to be transparent, I’ll go over what I can with you all.

Firstly, my mental health is not where I need it to be. Going on vacation felt like a great escape from current events but returning has made me feel even more depressed. This makes sense as we were put in a bubble of feeling “normal” and now that we’re back home and self-isolating again, things aren’t close to normal for us yet. I’ve been talking this over with my therapist, and I may be seeking a change in medication again with my doctor if I don’t get some relief soon. The depression is affecting my work and home life balance. Household chores, walking the dogs, etc. all seem to be too daunting to tackle, and I can’t muster the motivation to create or write either.

A Geeky Gal Monthly Recap: April 2021

Welcome to my April 2021 recap! Despite taking a vacation in late April, there is still plenty to catch up on this month. If you’ve missed anything, here’s your chance to catch up. With the first week of April already upon us, let’s take a look at the month of April here on A Geeky Gal!

Spoilers! 8 Years of Geeky Blogging

The month of April makes 8 amazing years of geeky blogging. Eight years is a long time to keep writing about my love of geeky things which is why my writing and my blog evolved over these past eight years. My writing and my blog will continue to evolve and be an extension of myself as I grow and change as well. These eight years would not have been the same without the amazing geeky community that I am honored to be a member of. I may not participate as much as I’d like, but sometimes life comes first. That’s also something I love about the community as well; everyone understands that blogs are hobbies for a lot of us. I have a full time job and a family, but writing for my blog has been an incredible outlet for me, and it’s why I’ve been keeping up with it for the last 8 years!

To celebrate such a big personal milestone, I wanted to share my personal favorite blog posts with all of you, just like I did last year but with some updates! Some of these posts still make me cringe a bit, but it shows how much I have grown as a writer and as a person. There were also long periods of time between my blog posts in the very beginning as I didn’t have a schedule worked out that made sense for my lifestyle at the time so some years have more posts than others. I enjoyed taking this tip down memory lane again, and I hope you will, too. Don’t be afraid to comment on some of these old posts to let me know your thoughts.

Top 8 Anime for Beginners

Tomorrow is National Anime Day! I know I’m a day early, but I don’t usually post on Thursdays. Please forgive me and accept my humble offering of my top 8 anime suggestions for beginners. These anime are typical Shoujo and Shounen picks, but don’t let those words intimidate you. Shoujo typically targets a feminine audience with a focus on romance, relationships, and emotions. Shounen typically targets a masculine audience with a focus on action and male protagonists. Despite the target audiences of these two genres, anyone can enjoy either or both. My husband and I are both the latter!

I ask that as you try out these anime on my list or any other anime that you give each one a fair chance, especially if anime is out of your comfort zone. It might be a bit strange or weird at first if you aren’t used to trope characters or reading subtitles or watching “adult” animation, but promise you’ll stick with it for a few episodes to see how you like it. I have varying picks here for those who love romantic comedies, action, superheroes, and even horror. I tried to touch as many genres as I could within my own favorite anime to give you a genuine list to start with. Hopefully you’ll find your gateway anime and become a part of our wonderful community! Now… Let’s get to this list!

Spoilers! Going on a (socially distanced) Vacation

Spoilers! Going on a (socially distanced) Vacation

The last time I went on a proper vacation was back when Alec and I went on our Disney honeymoon in 2019. We have been overdue for some time away, but with the pandemic still going on, we had to pick somewhere that wasn’t full of people and didn’t require getting on an airplane. So we booked a cabin out in Tennessee that has amazing views, nature trails, and plenty of things to do that will help us continue to be safe and socially distant. I can’t wait to recharge and enjoy nature with my partner and our pups.

With that being said, the blog and my social media accounts will be taking a break while I enjoy my vacation with my family. I hope all of you are taking some time to rest and recharge as well as we continue to navigate through current events! I’ll see you when I’m back on May 5th!

My Simple & Affordable YouTube Filming Setup

I thought it was about time that I let my readers take a peek behind the curtain of the meggsngrits’ YouTube filming setup. I started with some simple basics to just get started with YouTube and streaming and have slowly added to it as time has gone by. I still have plans for more upgrades down the line, but I wanted to share some options for those of you who have been wanting to create your own setup for YouTube or Twitch. While I have yet to stream on Twitch in an official capacity, these have been tried and true for all of my recording needs. If you are looking for a budget-friendly filming setup, this is the setup for you!

The Best Sims 4 Custom Content Creators: Build/Buy Edition

I can’t believe it’s been over a year since I did a “Current Favorite Things” post! I’m bringing it back to chat about my favorite Sims 4 customer content creators. I have been having so much fun playing The Sims 4 lately and have been dipping my toes into custom content more and more. I’m really excited to share these creators with you so be sure to show them some love by subscribing to their channels, joining their Patreon or donating to their Ko-Fi if you are able to, or following them on Twitter. Without creators like these lovely humans, The Sims 4 wouldn’t feel the same for me and many others.

My Favorite Amazon Purchases for Pups!

Back in January, my partner and I added a second dog to our family. It was quite the journey to finally get not only our application accepted, but to also be approved for the dog we applied for. Many families have been adopting during the pandemic, and I am so glad so many have found their forever homes! This terrific outcome from something so horrible came with a side effect: it was very, very difficult to find a puppy for adoption that was still available. After many emails, phone calls, and applications, I managed to not only get an accepted application but also approval for a dachshund beagle mix, otherwise known as a doxle. The only “catch” according to the rescue was that he had a disability: zero vision in his right eye and only half vision in his left. Alec and I weren’t deterred. Padme has had her own share of health issues, and we knew that we could handle the new puppy’s special circumstances. And so, we put down a deposit and drove two hours to a neighboring state to pick up our new family member!

Odin, named after the Greek god who himself is missing an eye, doesn’t let his lack of vision keep him from playing or getting into trouble haha! He is very smart and has caught onto his training quickly. Having a new puppy in the household has brought some challenges so I thought it would be a good time for me to share some purchases that have really helped us with Odin as well as our senior dog, Padme who had some health issues last year that really changed how our household functions. Below I will be giving my honest reviews on products I have purchased from Amazon for our two fur babies that have improved all of our lives.
