Welcome to my August 2021 recap! I have a new posting schedule, and I have also added a Tik Tok section for any Tik Toks you may want to catch up on. With the first week of September upon us, let’s take a look at the month of August here on A Geeky Gal and meggsngrits on YouTube!
I am (mostly) back from my hiatus. I think this is the longest purposeful break I have had from my blog in recent years. While it was never something I wanted to do, it was very much needed. Most of the issues from my hiatus announcement post have been resolved or are at least manageable now.
How to Create a Cute Office Snack Cart
So why a snack cart you may ask? Well other than just not being able to get enough of the video trend, I found myself stuck in my upstairs home office practically starving from skipping meals! I would get off of work in the afternoon, head downstairs to the kitchen, and inhale anything that I could eat immediately like chips, cookies, etc. That behavior has really wrecked my eating habits and self confidence so I was looking for ways I could give myself easy access to healthy foods and snacks when I can’t get away from my desk for a proper meal. Enter: my Sailor Moon Snack Cart.
On YouTube: What I Wish I Knew Before Becoming a 3D Modeler
Hey y’all! Today I’m chatting about things I wish I knew before becoming a 3D Artist. If you aren’t familiar with my journey to becoming a 3D Modeler, you can check out my Hobby to Career video. I am taking things back to when I was first considering a career in Game Art and what I wish I knew before pursuing Game Art and 3D Modeling.
Welcome to my April 2021 recap! Despite taking a vacation in late April, there is still plenty to catch up on this month. If you’ve missed anything, here’s your chance to catch up. With the first week of April already upon us, let’s take a look at the month of April here on A Geeky Gal!
The month of April makes 8 amazing years of geeky blogging. Eight years is a long time to keep writing about my love of geeky things which is why my writing and my blog evolved over these past eight years. My writing and my blog will continue to evolve and be an extension of myself as I grow and change as well. These eight years would not have been the same without the amazing geeky community that I am honored to be a member of. I may not participate as much as I’d like, but sometimes life comes first. That’s also something I love about the community as well; everyone understands that blogs are hobbies for a lot of us. I have a full time job and a family, but writing for my blog has been an incredible outlet for me, and it’s why I’ve been keeping up with it for the last 8 years!
To celebrate such a big personal milestone, I wanted to share my personal favorite blog posts with all of you, just like I did last year but with some updates! Some of these posts still make me cringe a bit, but it shows how much I have grown as a writer and as a person. There were also long periods of time between my blog posts in the very beginning as I didn’t have a schedule worked out that made sense for my lifestyle at the time so some years have more posts than others. I enjoyed taking this tip down memory lane again, and I hope you will, too. Don’t be afraid to comment on some of these old posts to let me know your thoughts.
Tomorrow is National Anime Day! I know I’m a day early, but I don’t usually post on Thursdays. Please forgive me and accept my humble offering of my top 8 anime suggestions for beginners. These anime are typical Shoujo and Shounen picks, but don’t let those words intimidate you. Shoujo typically targets a feminine audience with a focus on romance, relationships, and emotions. Shounen typically targets a masculine audience with a focus on action and male protagonists. Despite the target audiences of these two genres, anyone can enjoy either or both. My husband and I are both the latter!
I ask that as you try out these anime on my list or any other anime that you give each one a fair chance, especially if anime is out of your comfort zone. It might be a bit strange or weird at first if you aren’t used to trope characters or reading subtitles or watching “adult” animation, but promise you’ll stick with it for a few episodes to see how you like it. I have varying picks here for those who love romantic comedies, action, superheroes, and even horror. I tried to touch as many genres as I could within my own favorite anime to give you a genuine list to start with. Hopefully you’ll find your gateway anime and become a part of our wonderful community! Now… Let’s get to this list!
Welcome to my March 2021 recap! I have done some very different posts for the blog in the month of March. I’m really excited to keep bringing fresh content this year, and finding my happy place in writing again. I don’t have much to talk about for March so with the first week already starting, let’s take a look at the month of March here on A Geeky Gal!
I thought it was about time that I let my readers take a peek behind the curtain of the meggsngrits’ YouTube filming setup. I started with some simple basics to just get started with YouTube and streaming and have slowly added to it as time has gone by. I still have plans for more upgrades down the line, but I wanted to share some options for those of you who have been wanting to create your own setup for YouTube or Twitch. While I have yet to stream on Twitch in an official capacity, these have been tried and true for all of my recording needs. If you are looking for a budget-friendly filming setup, this is the setup for you!
I can’t believe it’s been over a year since I did a “Current Favorite Things” post! I’m bringing it back to chat about my favorite Sims 4 customer content creators. I have been having so much fun playing The Sims 4 lately and have been dipping my toes into custom content more and more. I’m really excited to share these creators with you so be sure to show them some love by subscribing to their channels, joining their Patreon or donating to their Ko-Fi if you are able to, or following them on Twitter. Without creators like these lovely humans, The Sims 4 wouldn’t feel the same for me and many others.
Back in January, my partner and I added a second dog to our family. It was quite the journey to finally get not only our application accepted, but to also be approved for the dog we applied for. Many families have been adopting during the pandemic, and I am so glad so many have found their forever homes! This terrific outcome from something so horrible came with a side effect: it was very, very difficult to find a puppy for adoption that was still available. After many emails, phone calls, and applications, I managed to not only get an accepted application but also approval for a dachshund beagle mix, otherwise known as a doxle. The only “catch” according to the rescue was that he had a disability: zero vision in his right eye and only half vision in his left. Alec and I weren’t deterred. Padme has had her own share of health issues, and we knew that we could handle the new puppy’s special circumstances. And so, we put down a deposit and drove two hours to a neighboring state to pick up our new family member!
Odin, named after the Greek god who himself is missing an eye, doesn’t let his lack of vision keep him from playing or getting into trouble haha! He is very smart and has caught onto his training quickly. Having a new puppy in the household has brought some challenges so I thought it would be a good time for me to share some purchases that have really helped us with Odin as well as our senior dog, Padme who had some health issues last year that really changed how our household functions. Below I will be giving my honest reviews on products I have purchased from Amazon for our two fur babies that have improved all of our lives.
Welcome to my February 2021 recap! We’ve made it through the first month of 2021 which honestly deserves a pat on the back after everything we gone through at the start of this year in the US. But we’re not here to talk about that right now. January 2021 had some new things for the blog and I’d really like to showcase that today! With the first week of February starting, let’s take a look at the month of January here on A Geeky Gal!
Since discovering K-Pop, I have been exploring new artists, because, let’s face it, K-Pop is more that just BTS and Blackpink. Don’t get me wrong; their songs always get me up and going – dancing, singing, and BTS and Blackpink have even gotten my partner into enjoying the Korean lyrics and pop beat! Since expanding my little K-Pop world, I have fallen head over heels for some of these songs on this new playlist that I created for the month of February.
Over the years, I have written many a blog post on romance and love centered around my love of geeky things. While they weren’t always posted in the month of February, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to shine a light on these posts, especially if you’re looking for V-Day ideas, games to play, and more. I’ve split these posts into some interesting categories for you to easily find what you might want to check out: from anime, to games (even horror games), to personal stories from yours truly… I hope to hit all the check boxes for you during the month of love.
I have been more than ready to dive back into finding games for my Gaming After Dark series since my last review. Life has had other plans unfortunately, but when I happened upon Blerdy Otome’s review of Full Service‘s demo, I immediately added it to my Steam wishlist. The holidays came through for me in the way of Steam game gifts, and I have finally had time to sit down and give Full Service my ~full~ attention.
My first impression of the game was honestly just surprise. I didn’t play the demo myself, and while I did read Naja’s review of the demo quite awhile ago, I didn’t remember much aside from a couple of screenshots that I thought were particularly spicy even with the characters’ clothes on. I went into the game basically blind. I knew the basic premise was going to be romancing some very handsome masseurs, but that’s pretty much the extent of my knowledge going to Full Service. So when I booted up the game, I had no expectations other than just the standard visual novel experience. I got so, so much more which I’ll break down a bit later. Let’s chat about my initial route first.

Happy New Year, geeks! 2020 was hard year for all of us, and I know I’m not alone in saying that I hope 2021 is kinder and that I’m so glad 2020 is over. We’re not out of the woods yet with the pandemic, and many of us are still struggling, but I’m choosing to look forward to what else 2021 will (hopefully) give us. I hope you will too despite the hand we’ve been dealt.
In the last few years, there has been immense growth on my blog. This past year has been steady with a slight uptick in views and visitors compared to the year before last. I even gained about 300 followers! My YouTube channel also passed 150 subscribers! For someone who blogs and makes videos as a creative outlet and for fun, I feel very happy with the growth I’ve seen. I’ve had to think long and hard about what I want to focus on this year and how 2020 has shaped my future personal and blog resolutions. So let’s look at those 2021 resolutions now.
Last year I did my first ever yearly recap! I noticed many of you really enjoyed it so I wanted to bring it back for 2020 too! As always, there are some highlighted posts that I loved writing in 2020 as well as a few of my favorite and most viewed YouTube channel videos from this year! I included at least two top posts for each month of 2020 as I did take a couple of mental health breaks during the year. Some months saw more views than others so I included the most viewed and popular posts for those months.
Looking back at all of these posts fills me with so much gratitude and happiness despite how crummy 2020 was, and I am very much looking forward to 2021 with all of you! Let’s make next year even better!
I can’t even remember the last time I wrote a book review for my blog (if ever?). After reading The Rise of Kyoshi though, I knew I needed to take to the blog for my honest thoughts about a book based upon one of the most renowned Avatars in the Last Airbender and Legend of Korra universe. We aren’t presented with the strong and powerful Kyoshi that is revered during Avatar, the Last Airbender. We are forced back in time to the very beginning of Kyoshi’s journey before she even knows that she is the Avatar, serving and befriending the false Avatar Yun. We travel with her on a heartbreaking journey as she discovers her past, her powers, and her true self.
