Month of Magic: A Hogwarts Party for Two

MoM_HPBanner-01

In case you haven’t heard: the month of July is dedicated to Harry Potter on AGeekyGal!  If you would like to get in on the madness, go to this master post and follow the instructions. Feel free to use my banner above for your blog post!

To end our wonderful Month of Magic: Harry Potter, I wanted to celebrate with a small Hogwarts feast for two! With my brother in town for the week, I thought it was the perfect opportunity to make some yummy dinner and dessert. Please forgive my picture taking skills! I will update these pictures as soon as I am moved into a nicer place.

20292858_1585956958081349_7938933360704844307_n.jpg

First is a really simple recipe for Hogsmeade Sweet & Sour Meatballs. I found a similar recipe on Pinterest and modified it to our tastes. This is an awesome and easy crock pot recipe!

  • One bag of your preferred frozen meatballs
  • One bottle of Kikkoman’s Sweet and Sour Sauce
  • 1/4 cup of lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup of soy sauce
  • chili powder to your taste
  • sesame seeds

Put the meatballs, Sweet and Sour Sauce, lemon juice, soy sauce and chili powder in the crock pot. Stir and combine all the ingredients. Set the crock pot on high for two hours. Stir them periodically and gently. Once heated through, plate them and sprinkle sesame seeds over top!

20429731_1585957091414669_5839525192924681241_n.jpg

To compliment our meatballs, I made some truly homemade mashed potatoes straight from Mrs. Weasley’s kitchen. If you’re feeling cool, top these with your sweet & sour meatballs. It’s really good!

  • 3 small to medium russet potatoes, peeled, washed, and cubed
  • 3 tablespoons of butter
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 to 1 cup of milk

Soak your cubed potatoes in a stock pot for about half an hour in cold water. Drain them then fill the pot with water again until they are covered. Bring to a boil on the stove. Once boiling, cover the pot and put on medium-low. Leave covered for about 15 minutes. Use a fork to check how tender they are. Once tender, drain and put back in the pot. Add butter, salt, and pepper. Use a potato masher to start mashing the potatoes and ingredients. Start adding the milk a little at a time and keep mashing until it is your desired creamy or chunky consistency.

Now you just need some veggies to balance out your feast. I love roasted veggies for literally every meal. They’re really easy to make.

  • asparagus
  • brussel sprouts
  • oil or cooking spray
  • salt and pepper

First, set your oven to 425F. Spray a cookie sheet with oil or drizzle a little on the pan and make sure to cover the entire surface. Next, chop the brussel sprouts in half. Lay these and the asparagus on the pan. Lightly brush oil over the tops of them before sprinkling a little salt and pepper all over the veggies. Finally, pop them in the over for 15 to 20 minutes, turning once half way through.

Plate your Hogwarts feast and sit down to enjoy a Harry Potter movie! We chose Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (or Philosopher’s Stone) to enjoy during our meal. It was a lot of food but really good and filling. I hope we can do it again for Halloween or Christmas for a big group. I think it’d go over really well!

20264992_1585956701414708_2178737618342387732_n.jpg

For dessert, I made Nerdy Nummies’ Butterbeer Milkshake! Man, are these babies sweet! I couldn’t even finish mine. I also left off the whipped cream and butter scotch morsels to save on my daily calorie count. You can check out my blog post on calorie counting and my diet in a later blog post.

I followed Ro’s instructions for the most part but I used Halo Top Vanilla Bean ice cream in place of just regular ice cream and a touch of milk to cut through some of the sweetness. I could have cut more calories using a diet cream soda if I was making these just for myself!

It was a wonderful night of magic and a great end to our Month of Magic: Harry Potter blog series. I can’t wait to see what blog posts you guys have ready for me to read!

Month of Magic: Favorite Theories of the HP Universe

MoM_HPBanner-01

In case you haven’t heard: the month of July is dedicated to Harry Potter on AGeekyGal!  If you would like to get in on the madness, go to this master post and follow the instructions. Feel free to use my banner above for your blog post!

JK has caused a few uproars with her “revelations” that border on canon and crazy. We still lover her and the wonderful HP universe that she has created though! Fans have their own theories too on JK’s HP universe. There’s always been a couple of things that never quite sat right with me that I’ll feature here in my favorite theories of the Harry Potter universe.

Hermione and Harry should have been together

maxresdefault.jpg

Put down your pitchforks and torches. Even JK commented on this in an interview. In the books, I never imagined Harry with Ginny or Hermione with Ron until the last couple of books. Harry and Hermione fit together in my head. Take this tent scene for instance. It’s awkward, but there’s a hint of romance. It just made sense in the earlier books that they would end up together.

The Deathly Hallows mirror Snape’s, Voldemort’s, and Harry’s deaths

tumblr_lf83i3912Y1qad7opo1_500.jpg

If you know the story of the Deathly Hallows, you know that Death tried to trick the brothers with gifts for outsmarting him. The first brother was given the Elder wand for power and died soon after from the enemies he made. The second brother was given the resurrection stone to bring back his deceased wife, who withers away; he commits suicide after losing his love. The third brother is given the invisibility cloak which he uses to hide from death until he is an old man then he greets death like an old friend.

The first brother is Voldemort. He died for power. The second brother is Snape, who died for his lost love, Lily. The third brother is Harry, who greeted death as an old friend. Now some are even speculating that Dumbledore is Death because of him greeting Harry in King’s Cross.

The Defense against the Dark Arts teaching position is cursed

course__courses_firstyeardefenseagainstthedarkarts__course-landing-still-1456036620.82.jpg

This is an easy one. Each Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher has only ever lasted one year during Harry’s school career. Did Tom Riddle curse the position after being denied it? Is that why Dumbledore wouldn’t let Snape take over the position? Will we ever find out?!

Neville Was Never Bad At Magic

Deathly-Hallows-Part-II-Official-Wallpapers-neville-longbottom-24047460-500-313.jpg

We know that the wand chooses the wizard but that wizards can use others’ wands; they just won’t perform at their best. Neville uses his father’s wand up until it’s broken after the battle at the Department of Mysteries. After getting his own wand, Neville vastly improves, even being compared to Hermione, who was the top student. He goes on to lead Dumbledore’s Army in Harry’s absence.

I knew I had to include some amazing cosplayers for Month of Magic. I had a few in mind already to share with you and few I found on my search for some magical cosplayers. If you ever want to start cosplaying or if you’re a beginner, check out AGeekyGal’s Cosplay Guide: How to Cosplay for BeginnersFirst Time Cosplaying: What to Expect, and AGeekyGal’s Fan Convention Guide: General Tips to get you started!

Ginny Di broke the internet with her Harry Potter cosplay pinup collection. She cosplays as three HP leading ladies: Hermione Granger, Luna Lovegood, and Ginny Weasley. Ginny is not just an excellent cosplayer but also a very sweet, down to earth person. I shared one of her blog posts on my facebook page recently. Check out her album here for more Harry Potter cosplays!

Starbit Cosplay is another amazingly talented cosplayer. I found her a long time ago from her Padme Amidala cosplay that was shared on another cosplayer’s page. Every cosplay she does, she knocks right out of the park! I mean just look at this Hermione Granger cosplay! She’s also awesomely funny if you check out some of her candid shots in cosplay.

I first saw Sweets4aSweet Cosplay as Fiona from Shrek in my Facebook feed. It was so well done, and she was such a sweet person that I knew I had to follow her and keep up with her future cosplays. Check out her wonderfully vile Dolores Umbridge!

I discovered MattEleven from his Eleven cosplay that was all over Pinterest. Not only is he excellent at playing the Doctor, he’s amazing as Newt Scamander as well! If you visit his facebook page, you can see the shoot of this cosplay and three other cosplayers (including Starbit Cosplay!) as Tina, Queenie, and Jacob.

Month of Magic: Games for a Wizard’s House Party

MoM_HPBanner-01

In case you haven’t heard: the month of July is dedicated to Harry Potter on AGeekyGal!  If you would like to get in on the madness, go to this master post and follow the instructions. Feel free to use my banner above for your blog post!

Finding adult Harry Potter inspired games was quite challenging! There’s a million and one drinking games and so many games meant for kids. I dug through them all and managed to find a few that may strike your fancy (as they certainly struck mine).

The Sorting Hat Ceremony

il_570xN.1052713320_6ayy.jpg

Give your friends this cool quiz to start the party off right. From cupcakes to the host choosing for you, this quiz may the best way for the sorting hat to put you in your house (unless you’ve all taken the Pottermore quizzes!).

Table Quidditch

easy+diy+table+quidditch.jpg

Looking for a cheap DIY game? Look no further than Table Quidditch.  Perfect for any age group but you can make it adult -friendly with some beer like traditional Beer Pong. You don’t have to use alcohol for this game but it might be more fun with it. Team up with other members of your house for this game!

Harry Potter and the Epic Drinking Game

Speaking of drinking games… Check this out. It’s one of the best I’ve found and is pretty detailed. Have some fun with it and add your own!

Wizards’ Duel (via the-leaky-cauldron.org)

5eda760def2b203e3a6e483fdabdd755.jpg

Have your guests  up (house vs. house) for the ultimate HP trivia game. Each pair gets a turn. The first one to belt out the correct answer gets a house point! Each round gets harder with more in depth questions! Above is a spell sheet that could be used.

Aurors and Death Eaters (via the-leaky-cauldron.org)

il_570xN.1259665085_1vgi.jpg

il_570xN.1250715041_nwnl.jpg

As your guests arrive, give them an envelope containing an assignment card of Auror or Death Eater and a pin (I love the Death Eater pin from Undeaddee & this cool Auror Owl pin from fairycakes). These are to be kept secret! The goal of the game is for the Aurors to catch the Death Eaters and the Death Eaters to foil the Aurors’ attempts. Explain the game after everyone arrives.

The game goes like this:

– Guests secretly whisper the incantation “Accio badge” to another guest. That guest must then trade pins with the attacker, without being noticed.

– If another guest witnesses a switch in progress, they must say “Expelliarmus”, and the switch is foiled.

– Aurors are trying to stick the DEs with their darkmarks and DEs are trying to steal the Auror’s badges. (so everyone is after the Auror badges, no one wants to be stuck with the darkmarks.)

– The game ends when the party host conjures the DarkMark by calling out “Morsmordre”

– All guests produce their assignment cards, and Aurors gather together and so do the Death Eaters. Whichever side has the most Auror badges is declared the winner.

Month of Magic: Spells I Need in Real Life

MoM_HPBanner-01

In case you haven’t heard: the month of July is dedicated to Harry Potter on AGeekyGal! I’m kicking off the first post with four quotes to live by, straight from the series. If you would like to get in on the madness, go to this master post and follow the instructions. Feel free to use my banner above for your blog post!

I’ve watched Harry Potter so many times and have re-read the books so much. The main thing I wish I could pull from those pages would be the spells and charms. They could make life so much easier. I picked out  a few of my favorites that I would totally be using every day in the wizarding world.

Accio

lacie-slezak-128106.jpg

A charm that causes a target at a distance from the caster to fly over to them. I would never have to look for my phone again. Or anything else for that matter.

Ascendio

talitha-neville-228468.jpg

A charm used to lift the caster high into the air or propel them to the surface should they be underwater at the time. Being 5′ 1″, this would be awesome to use every day. No more step stools, no more climbing cabinets… I could even reach inside the washing machine without almost falling in!

Crinus Muto

george-bohunicky-118985.jpg

A Transfiguration spell that can be used to transform the color and style of the caster’s hair. I would never have to go to the hair stylist again. I could have a different hair color every day of the week. No straightener, no curling iron. Just an all natural, transfiguration spell. 😉

Episkey

katherine-hanlon-242211.jpg

A healing spell that heals relatively minor injuries such as broken noses and split lips. Maybe not so much for myself as for those around me. It’d be awesome to pull out my wand and fix a little injury. A first aid kit right in the palm of my hand without having to wait for noses and  lips to heal.

Feather-Light Charm

corinne-kutz-211259.jpg

A charm used to make heavy objects lighter in terms of weight. Remember my height I mentioned earlier? This is another spell I’d use all the time. Heavy bag? Charm it! Heavy laundry? Charm it! Heavy furniture? Charm it!

Month of Magic: DIY’s for Your Own Burrow

MoM_HPBanner-01

In case you haven’t heard: the month of July is dedicated to Harry Potter on AGeekyGal! I’m kicking off the first post with four quotes to live by, straight from the series. If you would like to get in on the madness, go to this master post and follow the instructions. Feel free to use my banner above for your blog post!

Ever since I started planning my wedding, I have been all over Pinterest looking at easy DIY’s I can create to save a little cash. I ran across some Harry Potter wedding DIY’s and got inspired! I collected a few HP DIY decor pieces for everyone to check out. They range from a subtle reference to our beloved fandom to in-your-face-but-totally-still-cool. Take the weekend, and do one of these awesome DIY’s to add some magic to your own burrow.

DIY-Harry-Potter-Art-from-Landeelu.jpg

This super easy wall art by Landeelu has captured my heart. I love the sayings, and you can even make up your own to be silly or inspirational. It’s totally customizable so feature your favorite characters with their own “like-ness” to bring a bit of awesome to a gallery wall, over the bed, or in the office. If you don’t want to DIY it yourself, you can buy one from her Etsy shop here!

DIY-Giant-Hanging-Time-Turner-Decoration-683x1024.jpg

Anyone else want to give Hermione’s Time Turner a go? Make your own giant Time Turner inexpensively and simply with Lauren’s tutorial that includes a step-by-step Youtube video. Hang it in your office as a statement piece, hang it as a mobile in the nursery, or hang it outside on the porch and watch it spin to your heart’s content.

harry-potter-deathly-hallows-dream-catcher.jpg

I’ve always had a soft spot for dream catchers since I was small, and they make me think of my mom who has a dream catcher tattoo on her shoulder. I saw this one on etsy and looked high and low for a good tutorial to make one at home. That’s when I found My Craftily Ever After and fell in love with her DIY Deathly Hallows dream catcher.

Now for something a little more subtle: the suitcase table. I frequent estate sales and the one thing I see lots of? Old suitcases. This piece could be super affordable to make if you can get a deal on the suitcase. Create this adorable piece to display in your living room or bedroom. Get shorter legs and a larger suitcase to create a coffee table!
