MCFT: Summer Staple Pieces with Geeky Flare

With summer finally in full swing here in St. Louis, I had a chance to break out my hot-weather wardrobe, and it feels so good! I wanted to share with you a few looks from my closet that are similar for you to try out yourself. Here’s my summer must-have’s of the year.

Printed shorts are my go-to for chilling out on the weekend. They’re very Kimmy Schmidt-esque. They’re cute, comfortable and can be worn with any solid colored top. This pair of flamingo shorts is made for summer concerts, beach trips and getting wine with Titus.

Off-the-shoulder is very trendy right now; whether it’s a top or a dress, you’ll be staying cool with the “cold shoulder” detail. Check out my Belle inspired look with a plain pair of jeans and white top. Splash in some nice brown leather and yellow and you’re casually Disney-bounding! What’s great about this trend is you can find it in most retail stores in a variety of colors and sizes.

This outfit and the one above it have something in common… A gorgeous bralette! They are my favorite thing this summer! Cool and pretty under my favorite shirts and so, so comfortable. Victoria’s Secret has them on sale right now! You can find them in other stores too, but I like mine a lightly lined and not so see-through. I took a page from Megara’s book and paired it with purple and brown.

Maxi skirts are now a big thing in my summer closet. They’re cool enough to get me through hot days but chic enough for every day at the office. Just add unicorns for a splash of magic! (I’ve been on a unicorn kick since I saw Nerdy Nummie’s Unicorn Cake.) The skirt I have is from Torrid and has a sexy slit up the side (to keep you cool of course!). It’s also fun to pair these up with colorful geeky tops and cute themed clutches.

What are your favorite summer staples this year? How do you pair them with your geeky accessories? Let me know in the comments!

MCFT: St. Louis Eats

After my big move to St. Louis from a little town in Alabama, I tried to fit in a few touristy things. The best part of doing touristy things has been the FOOD! St. Louis has so much to offer and so many great restaurants, from holes in the wall to famous establishments. If you’re ever in St. Louis, you gotta try these places.

Hendrick’s BBQ

This place has become my favorite restaurant to bring my out-of-town guests to. The vibe is industrial rustic with BBQ so good you’ll wanna slap ya momma! Eat inside, on the patio, or on the deck with live music on the weekends. It’s never overly busy, and the wait staff is always on their game. Chat them up to find out favorite menu items of their customers.

Recommendations: Smoked Brisket, Chicken Biscuit, Macaroni and Cheese, Green Beans, Lemonade, Tennessee Tart (alcoholic)

Fitz’s Restaurant

Known for their root beer, Fitz’s is a very popular eatery on The Loop in St. Louis. I recommend reservations if possible! We went on a Sunday, and it was so packed, but so worth it. Definitely the best root beer floats I’ve ever had!

Recommendations: B.L.A.S.T., Bison Burger with Sweet Potato Fries, The Trolley Root Beer Float, Cream Soda

Dave & Tony’s

I was taken here by a good friend to get a quick dinner before a night of DnD. The best chicken sandwich I’ve had in awhile. You’ll want to eat it as soon as possible! Build your own burger with a cheat sheet at the front of the restaurant or order from the traditional menu. I can’t wait to try the other burger combinations! And don’t skip the garlic herb fries. They are heaven.

Recommendations: Grilled Chicken, Pretzel Bun, Garlic Herb Fries, Fitz’s Root Beer

The Hill has so many great restaurants. Favazza’s is a little on the fancy side but don’t think that you have to dress fancy to eat here! Eat on the patio and let the fireplace warm you under the stars or eat inside with good music and great vibes from the decor. You can’t leave St. Louis without trying some toasted ravioli, and if you stop in at Favazza’s you really should grab it as an appetizer!

Recommendations: Toasted Ravioli, House Salad, Filet Mignon, Salmon

My Current Favorite Things: PLUS+ White Dresses

I’ve started planning for the wedding, and it is already crazy stressful. I’ve been ghosted by TWO caterers! Which may end up being a blessing. Thankfully, the venue was a pretty easy decision. It’s very close to my mom’s house in sweet home Alabama.

While looking at wedding dresses (still a bit too soon to actually buy one for the wedding since its 18 months away), I’ve stumbled across dresses I’d love to wear to our courthouse ceremony (pre-wedding), grand exit, and rehearsal dinner. Because of immigration, the Fiance and I will be heading to the courthouse to officially marry (yay!) within 90 days of him landing in Missouri. We still want this day to be special, but I don’t want to spend money on two wedding dresses or even wear a formal wedding dress to the court house. Here’s some options I’ve stumbled upon from Torrid.

Chiffon Lace Inset V-Neck Maxi Dress

I love maxi dresses and I love the sheer bottom of this one! It’s a must have and can be used again on the (warm) honeymoon!

Lace Trim Off Shoulder V-Hem Dress

Off-The-Shoulder is super in right now. I can just see myself in this at our rehearsal dinner or relaxing at the resort pool or even on a date night.

Lace Cold Shoulder Trapeze Dress

More off-the-shoulder goodness! I’m all about the lace and this looks so comfortable! A must have for the rehearsal dinner and date night at the resort.

Special Occasion Lace Inset High Neck Maxi Dress

My favorite of the bunch: this would be an amazing look at the courthouse. It’s not too traditional but still very much special for the occasion.

Special Occasion Lace Off Shoulder Gown

You can’t go wrong with this dress. While perhaps too “gown-like” for a rehearsal dinner or the beach, you can rock this gown straight to the courthouse or down the aisle.

My Current Favorite Things: Wedding Center Pieces

As I plan my wedding, I’ve had a hard time finding centerpieces I like that will match the warehouse venue I’ve chosen as well as the color pallet I’ve picked. Here’s a few of my favorites I’ve found via Pinterest. You can follow me here!

Gold & Copper Spray-Painted Tin Cans

Collect different size tin cans, clean them up, and spray paint away! A simple and cheap DIY for you budget brides.

Milk Bottles

I fell in LOVE with these milk bottles from IKEA and can’t wait to incorporate them into the centerpieces! They’re inexpensive and don’t need anything but a few flowers or a candle to complete them.

I also saw these amazing lanterns in various sizes and colors in IKEA. You can group them to create a lovely centerpiece, add one with other varying objects, or have it stand alone with flowers or a candle lit inside of it.

Brass & Gold Candlesticks

I would recommend buying these from Dollar Tree and spraying them your desired color. Brass and gold candlesticks can be expensive. If you are able to find these at an antique shop for a decent price, snatch them up!

Branches in Hurricane Vases

You can get these vases for cheap at Dollar Tree and pick up branches in your yard! Easy-peasy for a DIY Bride. Spice them up with candles or flowers or spray paint stripes on them using tape and spray paint.

My Current Favorite Things: Travel Edition

Lipstick-Sized Portable Charger

I originally bought one of these as a gift for my long-distance boyfriend as a part of our annual AnniBirthmas. He liked his a lot so I went back to get myself one! This powerful portable charger has been perfect for being on the go, even better when you’re overseas and don’t have a plug adapter! It takes about 1 1/2 to 2 hours to fully charge my Samsung S6 Edge.

Travelon Luggage Tags

I bought these in berry to help my navy blue luggage stand out a little more. You just remove the strap to swivel the front to reveal the rest of your information. Cheap and durable!

Passport Holder Wallet

I bought this RFID Blocking Passport Holder/Wallet in purple to store all of my monies, cards, ID, and passport in one place. It’s definitely come in handy at the airport and traveling with important documents!

Carry On Toiletry Bag Kit

So this little bag has been a life saver. I had a long drive (9.5 hours!) then connecting flights that added up to about 10+ hours. I put my perfume, deodorant, toothpaste, etc. in this bag so I could freshen up between driving, flights, and before seeing my long-distance boyfriend.

Packing Cubes

I need to stay organize, especially on long trips, so I bought these awesome packing cubes! They even came with a laundry bag! They also fit A LOT. I’m talking, 4 dresses, two skirts, one pair of jeans, two pairs of leggings, two sets of pajamas and that’s just in the largest cube!

Geeky Valentine’s Date Ideas

I’m always looking for low-key/inexpensive date ideas but never could find any that were actually geek-themed besides taking a trip to Orlando (looking at you Disney World and Wizarding World of HP). I decided I’d come up with my own date ideas that my boyfriend and I would enjoy!  The only requirements were: Can it be within an hour of home? How can I make it geeky? Can it be cheap? Here’s the ideas I’ve gathered! Add yours in the comments below!

Netflix & Chill Date: Superhero Style

Fire up Netflix/Hulu/Amazon Prime and settle in for a super hero marathon. For Marvel try: Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Agents of SHIELD. For DC try: Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and Gotham. For unconventional heroes try: Heroes, Supernatural, Doctor Who, Torchwood, and Sherlock.

Drive-in Theater: Pajamas Date

Slip on your comfiest pajamas and bunny slippers and get to your nearest drive-in theater. Settle in with lots of pillows, snacks, and blankets. Bonus points if it’s a geek movie!

Ghost Tour Date: Adrenaline Rush

Book a tour with your date and bring along your cameras to catch paranormal activity if the spirits decide to grace you with their presence. I’m a huge fan of Ghost Adventures and Ed & Lorraine Warren. I would love to explore one of the locations they investigated and hear all the stories of what goes on in these places. It’s a scary date but one that my paranormal lovers will absolutely take delight in!

Amusement Park Date: Closet Cosplay Style

This one is probably my favorite. Do a couple’s closet cosplay then go out to an amusement park! Take lots of pictures, enjoy the thrill of rides, and yummy fair foods. This would be perfect for Disney couples, Pixar couples, and any of your favorite, easy-to-dress-as characters!

Board/Video Game Date

Has it been awhile since you’ve played Overwatch? Halo? How about monopoly? Or the Game of Life? Settle in with your SO on the couch or at the table to play some games together. Make it a double date and try your hand at Betrayal at House on a Hill or Takenoko. One of my coworkers told me he and his wife love to play cards so try Slap Jack or War!
