Heather at Just Geeking By has created wonderful and unique prompts for Sundays! There are a few other sites out there who post weekly prompts, but I have to say Heather’s are by far some of the most unique and imaginative that I’ve read. I’m really excited to make Seriously Geeky Sundays a staple here on the blog! See the prompts here!
I am playing catch up currently so these are past prompts that I wanted to participate in. This prompt is about Geek Pride. Heather asked “Did you guys know that there’s a Geek Pride Day? I didn’t until last year. It originally started in Spain in 2006 before spreading around the Internet to become an annual celebration of all things geeky. It’s tomorrow [May 25th], and it is the inspiration for this weeks theme. “

What is your Geek origin story?
I grew up very, very shy. I had a couple of really good, close friends who embraced my weirdness and a mother who let me have my fandoms even though she probably also found it weird! My childhood was a bit lonely though, and I found comfort through television, my PlayStation, and reading. Through my first fandoms, like Harry Potter and InuYasha, I was able to find my voice. Through my later fandoms like video games and Doctor Who, I was able to find myself.
About 4 years ago, I wrote about the 5 fandoms who made me who I am which included Harry Potter, InuYasha, Doctor Who, and, of course, video games. On the first day of my Geek Out Challenge I talked about what I considered my first fandom which was InuYasha. I feel like I explained my origin story the best through this post so I’m going to include a quote from that post that doesn’t just apply to InuYasha, but all of the fandoms I loved and helped me find my voice and myself.
I do want to acknowledge that some my fandoms are problematic. As I’ve grown up, I see where those issues lie within the author of Harry Potter, the characters and mannerisms within InuYasha, etc. When I have the spoons to do so, I plan on tackling those problematic issues through a series of blog posts, but this post is meant to be positive so let’s move on!
What does being a geek mean to you?
Being a geek to me means almost anything and everything. You can geek out over motocross, photography, plushies, true crime, etc. Being a geek isn’t confined to anime, comics, or video games. If you love it, you can be a geek about it! But, I think it’s important to touch on what being a geek has also done for me. Playing video games set me on my current career path and brought me closer to my childhood best friend, my brother, and my husband. Reading gave me confidence and an escape. Anime brought new friends into my life.
How do you express your geeky side?
I think a list would be really handy for this question! (Plus I love lists.)
- Writing on my blog about geeky things I love
- Creating geeky YouTube videos
- Cosplaying as my favorite characters
- Going to anime conventions
- Wearing geeky tees and other geeky clothing items
- Buying fanmade artwork and decor

What are some of your favorite geeky websites and places to shop?
This is a good time to plug an amazing list of geeky shops that I put together for OWLS’ The Mini CONmmunity: Anime is Never Cancelled! Amazing black, woman, and black woman-owned shops can be found here.
Who are some of your favorite geeky celebrities?
Wil Wheaton and Felicia Day my two favorite geeky celebrities! Wil and Felicia are both very successful geeks who I identify with and inspire me greatly. Both geeky celebrities have created or starred in podcasts and web series which is something I’d love to do in the future. I go into more detail about how Wil and Felicia inspire me in my Geek Out Challenge: Day 6 post if you’d like to read more!
