Seriously Geeky Sundays: Animation

Heather at Just Geeking By has created wonderful and unique prompts for Sundays! There are a few other sites out there who post weekly prompts, but I have to say Heather’s are by far some of the most unique and imaginative that I’ve read. I’m really excited to make Seriously Geeky Sundays a staple here on the blog! See the prompts here!

I’m super excited to be the first host  of Seriously Geek Sundays! Heather has graciously let me pick an August topic, and if you read the title, you already know it’s ANIMATION! Heather says that there are so many different types of animation out there now and each of us have our own favorites and memories associated to them. This week we’re picking your brain about the animated world.

Please drop your links in the comments below this post so other participants and readers can read your answers. Take a moment to check out the other links listed there too and read some of the fantastic answers by other SGS participants!

What is your favorite Disney movie?

This is always a hard one. I love so many for so many different reasons! If I had to pick one that’s recent though, it would be Onward. Obviously I snot-cried while watching this and thoroughly enjoyed every moment of the movie! Ian and Barley set out on a quest in order to spend one more day with their late father on Ian’s 16th birthday. Did I mention that they’re elves? Oh, and there’s a magical staff, and a legendary manticore, and lots of other magical nods that D&D players and lovers of magic and lore might enjoy.

What is your favorite non-Disney movie?

I am going with Miyazaki’ The Secret World of Arrietty which is by Studio Gihbli. I honestly wish it had an entire Netflix show with multiple seasons. Arrietty is your average rebellious teen except she’s tiny and lives with her tiny parents in a typical family home, but the life size owners don’t know that. I wanted to see more about their daily lives, and how her friendship blossoms with the family’s son, Shawn. I simply loved the animation and story so much!

What is your favorite animated show?

Most definitely Legend of Korra (Avatar the Last Airbender). I did a review on the TV show not too long ago, but I also have plans to review the comics and write a Mental Health in the Geek Community post on Korra’s PTSD. If you adored ATLA, you’ll love LoK as well. It’s a more grown up version for those of us who grew up with ATLA. If you would like to read more about it, be sure to click the link above for my review.

What was your favorite childhood show?

I had so many! Powerpuff Girls, Scooby Doo, Rugrats, Courage the Cowardly Dog… I could go on and on! But if I had to pick my most favorite from back then, it probably would be Powerpuff Girls. I thought the girls kicked ass and wanted to be like Blossom (let’s be real, I’m basically Blossom). That was probably the first time I collected merchandise from a fandom too. I had plushies, clothes, and even a special PPG cake for a birthday party once!

Who is your favorite animated character?

If you’re new here, you may not know how much I adore Asuna Yuuki from Sword Art Online. You can take a peek at my Asuna figurine collection over on my YouTube channel during my Week in the Life: Self Isolation Edition video! She was my first cosplay. She’s gotten her own character playlist too! I’ve written quite a bit about her on my blog and how much I love her character!

What is your favorite piece of music from animation?

This might sound silly, but I added Disney’s Moana‘s ‘How Far I’ll Go’ (the one by Alessia Cara) to my work out playlist forever ago, and it never fails to push me harder. I really like to save it for my last set so I can feel that rush as I pass my personal finish line. The lyrics get me every time and I love to belt it out in the car on the way to work or the gym. It’s the perfect song to hype you up for literally anything.

Please go check out Heather’s geeky Sunday prompts! You can see the introductory post here! Tell me about some of your favorite animations and characters in the comments below!

  1. I haven’t seen Onward yet.. I really should ! Even though they disrespected unicorns! :O
I do like the concept of the movie but there are a few things design wise I don’t really like.. not sure how to explain it..but there is something about the it that makes me wanna watch it..but at a low priority so it keeps getting pushed back!

Yay for you mentionning Power Puff Girls that show as just so amazing! (Before the reboot/restart) Courage I also really liked. Scooby Doo I never really liked.. for some reason as a kid I had a huge beef with Fred. Like I decided I did not like Fred..that child hood aversion is still there.. 😛 Like I dont mind him but it just go Yuck.. it’s Fred…Tiny Pinkie messed me up! I did still watch it a lot though. Courage I loved as well.. which isn’t weird cause he was pink! xD

I do think current Disney songs cater a lot to having much more motivation in them, there are very many songs that do that well. I prefer the old days and the villian days ..but I did notice the shift how songs shifted from scary and intimidating , Be Prepared and Hellfire are my favourites villian songs to much more empowering songs! Mother knows best is a fun song too though! And Friends on the Other side as well.. so I guess villian songs still aren’t to bad.. just in the post Frozen age.. empowerment rules.

  2. I’m looking forward to checking Onward out when it finally gets to the movie channels over here. We only just got Frozen 2 (we don’t have Disney + right now). Then I’ll add it to our oh so long TBW list and we’ll eventually get to it when we can synchronise our schedules /facepalm

I love that song from Moana too! To be honest, I love the whole soundtrack from Moana and listened to it before I watched the film.

  3. I haven’t watched ‘Onward’ yet but it is on my list of movies to see when it is available XD! All the childhood shows, especially Courage the Cowardly Dog are favorites I watched as a kid (although Courage was a bit of a strange one LMAO). I really liked ‘How Far I’ll Go’ as that was a cruising song for me back when I lived on Hawaii, hahaha, the song played everywhere on the islands for a time when Moana came out. Those were good days XD.

      1. You’re welcome to take part at any point during the week 🙂 I realise not everyone can make Sunday or find out about if after the fact, like yourself, and I’m introducing the alternative title ‘Seriously Geeky Series’ for situations like that so it doesn’t feel weird. So feel free to post under that title!

  4. Asuna is one of my favorite anime ladies- the series has done her multiple disservices in the past, but when they get it right it’s perfect!

And Moana’s soundtrack was so good! It’s hard to go wrong with Lin Manuel-Miranda at the helm. “We Know the Way” is my favorite track, I love how well he took traditional Hawaiian singing and melded it with a more Western style and crafted some wholly unique, but that still honors the traditions it’s representing.
