I’m back with another Webtoon recommendation. This time is a little different though. This Webtoon is based on BTS’s Universe/Bangtan Universe (BU) which is an alternate universe of the popular boy band. The characters are named after the seven members and are their alter egos. Stumbling upon this Webtoon after searching for some K-Pop and K-Drama inspired comics has lead me down yet another rabbit hole thanks to my new found interest in K-Pop.
Brief intro: Our protagonist and narrator, Kim Seok-jin (BTS’s Jin), is trapped in a time loop, repeatedly reliving his life starting from the 11th of April, from which he can only escape when he saves his six best friends from their unhappy endings. He begins to learn the rules of the time loop in each iteration with hopes to bring all seven of them together again.
“Seven boys. Best friends. Their fates intertwined through the good times together, but also the tough times, as they have gone their separate ways and suffered greatly as a result. When all is almost lost for these boys, one is given a special chance to go back in time and help his friends fix the mistakes that led them down this path. He’ll do anything to save them, but can he? Or is he too late?” — SAVE ME
Review: When I found myself falling down this rabbit hole of theories that surround the BU, I had no idea what I was getting into. The Webtoon SAVE ME was my first experience into the BU. Silly me didn’t know the most of the boys’ real names so I had a very faint idea of who was who, but not really. Don’t worry though, if you’re just here to read an amazing story, you don’t need to know BTS.
SAVE ME can stand on it’s own as a moving story with beautiful artwork. Its story is not just moving, but also deeply emotional with some triggering content like suicide and more. SAVE ME is only 16 episodes so if you like to read several episodes in one sitting, this one is easy to do. Even though it’s short, SAVE ME packs a punch that will leave you breathless.
I will say that you will have a newfound appreciation for the comic if you choose to look into the BU, and its many fan theories. A very nice redditor put together a doc that can help you on your journey to learning more about SAVE ME’s story. What makes this even better is Big Hit Entertainment created the BU and encourages fan theories. So theorize to your heart’s content.
At the end of the day, SAVE ME is about friendship and the deep connections the boys have made with each other. Their lives are more intertwined than they know. As Seok-jin continues to relive the same span of time, he gets one step closer each time to saving them from their terrible fates. But can Seok-jin save them all? Can he save himself?
Bottom Line: Even if you’re not a fan of BTS, this comic is heavy, beautifully done, and worth the read.
