Seriously Geeky Sundays: Beginnings

Heather at Just Geeking By has created wonderful and unique prompts for Sundays! There are a few other sites out there who post weekly prompts, but I have to say Heather’s are by far some of the most unique and imaginative that I’ve read. I’m really excited to make Seriously Geeky Sundays a staple here on the blog! See the prompts here!

Today’s prompt is about beginnings. While I have a couple of introduction posts floating around on the blog, I think this is a great opportunity to introduce myself to new readers and give my returning readers some fun tidbits about myself that they may have missed or might be new on this long, wonderful seven year journey of blogging!

Who is A Geeky Gal? What does she do?

My name is Megan, and I’m the creator of A Geeky Gal! A little bit of background on me: I graduated in 2014 with a degree in Game Art. I have a full time job as a 3D modeler and graphic designer, but I enjoy spending my free time writing for A Geeky Gal, making YouTube videos for the blog’s counterpart, Megan Marie, as well as reading (currently obsessed with Webtoons), playing video games (horror being a classic favorite genre of mine), and watching anime (if it has romance in it, I’ll probably like it).

I am married to a wonderful man from Ireland. We went through the K1 Visa (Fiance Visa) process and got married in October 2017. We had a beautiful wedding with both of our families in my hometown of Alabama in October 2018. We live in St. Louis, Missouri with our sassy long haired chihuahua named Padme (yes, after Star Wars).

When did I start blogging?

I started this blog exactly seven years ago this month! I started by writing on Blogger. It was a bit of a personal journal and a way to try to heal after an abusive relationship. I shared my poetry, some real life stuff, and even a couple of game reviews. I realized I really enjoyed the process of the game review posts. Not knowing what to do (rebrand? new site? new name?), a friend convinced me to move over to WordPress, and A Geeky Gal was born!

Do I identify as a geek or nerd, or both?

You may be able to tell by taking a look around my blog that I most definitely identify as a geek! I used to be able to identify as both a geek and a nerd back when I was in school. I loved academics and probably should have gone on to do something related to that. I think in another life I could have been a funky librarian. Alas, my heart lies in the arts which gave me an appreciation for games, comics, animated films, etc. That appreciation led to an obsession excessive enthusiasm that I poured into my blog and YouTube channel.

When did I first realize I was a geek?

In middle school, I transferred to a magnet school which was for kids who were “gifted.” I spent the better part of that year with almost no friends besides sweet Alana who was from Russia who I had English and P.E. with. One day while I was on the way to my first class of the day, I spotted a classmate wearing an InuYasha t-shirt. Being the extremely shy person I was, I mustered up all of the courage I had and told her I liked her shirt.

I didn’t know this small compliment was about to open me up to an entire friend group that loved anime and manga. The first time we all met up, I realized I was a geek among the friendliest geeks. They introduced me to more anime and helped me discover manga. I finally had a friend group, but I also knew I was about to fall down the rabbit hole of geeky fandoms.

What was my first geeky interest?

When I was about 6 or 7-years-old, I moved to a new school in the middle of my first grade school year. I was so embarrassed when I found out that everyone else in my class could already read! I told Mrs. Morrison that I was worried I would never learn how to read, but she helped me and before I knew it, I was one of the top readers in my class. Where is this trip down memory lane going? Well, it’s going to the library.

My reading level was above many of my peers which gave me access to chapter books! I discovered Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. What followed was years of waiting outside bookstores for the next book, heading to the theaters for the latest movie installment, collecting t-shirts from Hot Topic, and finally being able to go to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando, Florida. I loved Harry Potter back then, and I still find it just as magical today. It will forever hold a special place in my heart.

When was the first movie I watched this year?

I loveLOVElove horror movies, so when I heard The Grudge was coming out, I knew I had to see it. Usually I wait for movies to go to DVD before seeing them because I hardly ever have a good experience when I go to the cinema. I made the exception though when my friends said they were going and invited Alec and me. Without giving away any spoilers, I hated the movie. I was very disappointed, but I have high hopes for other movies that are coming out the rest of this year!

Please go check out Heather’s geeky Sunday prompts! You can see the introductory post here! Now that I’ve introduced myself, why don’t you tell me something about you down in the comments below?

  1. I can’t say I’m shocked that Harry Potter was your first geeky interest 😉 I really enjoyed reading through your answers and learning some new things about you, Megan! The story about how you realised you were a geek is absolutely adorable and I’m so glad that they welcomed you into their group and introduced you to a world of limitless imagination.

  2. I haven’t seen the new Grudge film, but I did watch the Japanese one a while I go. That was pretty disappointing too and I didn’t rate it much. I might watch the new one eventually but after hearing your thoughts, I’m in no rush. It’s a shame you didn’t like it when you made the trip to go see it.

  3. Thank you Megan for sharing and introducing yourself 🙂 It was very interesting to read and get to know you better!!!!

It seems only fair that you introduce and share things about yourself, that I do the same in return. I am what people would call a “Jack of All Trades”. I have worked as a gardener, nuclear reactor operator, math and science tutor, computer programmer, customer support, taxi and bus driver and now training to be a tax accountant. Me and bosses don’t get along, so I tend to start my own business than work for someone else.

I love horror movies and books along with science fiction. That is the problem with watching a movie in a cinema, get pumped up about going to see a movie and it ends up a disappointment. That is why I tend to wait until the movie is streaming. That way I haven’t wasted any money if it turns out to be a bomb. So what about the “The Grudge” made it a disappointment for you?
