I saw this tag over on The Animanga Spellbook and wanted to save it for today in honor of International Women’s Day! This tag was originally created by Kate at Melting Pots and Other Calamities, but I stumbled upon this tag on The Animanga Spell Book. Aria has such great content. Make sure you check out her tagged post as well! To answer these questions, I’m picking some of my favorite heroines from anime and video games with a special appearance from one of my favorite Western animations…
The Rules:
- Please PINGBACK to me at Kate @ Melting Pots and Other Calamities. Or just Kate. And PINGBACK TO A SPECIFIC POST OF MINE. I won’t see the post otherwise, and I’d like to see it.
- Answer the questions.
- Choose female characters from books, movies, TV, anime, Webtoons, etc.
- Tag as many people as you want, but at least one person.
- Have fun!
Name a heroine you like, but whom you feel is always overshadowed by the male characters in the story.
Alice (Food Wars) – After finishing the first three seasons of Food Wars on Hulu, I was completely in love with the whole premise of the show. Interesting characters and scrumptious food? YES! I just wish Alice had gotten more screen time. She is just as competitive as the other female leads, but definitely gets overshadowed by the male characters.
For that matter, name a heroine whom you feel is always overshadowed by the other female characters in the story.
Paine ( FFX-2) – Final Fantasy X-2 is one of my favorite games; however, I played it backwards and never finished FFX! Please don’t judge me. I had no idea how Final Fantasy worked, but fell in love with dress spheres and turn-based combat. Yuna is strong and a steadfast leader. Rikku is the cute and energetic, bring positivity to their threesome. But Paine tends to get pushed to the wayside on their adventures. It’s up to the player to uncover her mysterious past.
Name a character who had potential but was greatly underutilized in her story.
Kairi (KH) – Now, I have not played KH III yet, so I will only apply this to Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II. Kairi’s character has so much potential, and yet I felt teased for the brief moments we get to see her in action. I really hope Kingdom Hearts III sees her really kick some booty.
Name a female character who you either find better in her book than her movie, find better in her movie than her book, or whose portrayals you find equal.
Snow White (Wolf Among Us) – Snow White could be compared to her original counterpart, her Disney counterpart, or her Fable comics counterpart. I found Snow White in Wolf Among Us and the Fable comics to be a freakin’ bad ass and so much better than her original and Disney counterparts.
Name a character who you want more backstory on.
Haruhi Fujioka (Ouran High School Host Club) – Haruhi quickly stole my heart in the first episode of OHSHC. I really should pick up the manga which I’m sure goes into more of her back ground and history with living with her dad who took on both roles of mother and father in her life. I can only hope that one day we’ll get more episodes of Ouran High School Host Club.
Name a character with traits you feel are sadly overlooked by everyone.
Asami Sato (Legend of Korra) – Trapped in a love triangle, Asami’s intelligence, skills, and her high position in Future Industries get pushed to the side in favor of drama and romance (and you know how much I love drama and romance). I was so frustrated that Asami was used that way for so long before her character finally got to blossom just a little bit. I’m still keeping my fingers crossed for more Legend of Korra that will follow Korra and Asami in the Spirit World.
Name a morally grey character. (Villain or anti hero!)
Alice Synthesis Thirty (Sword Art Online: Alicization) – As an integrity knight, Alice is one of the main opponents of Kirito and Eugeo encounter in SAO: Alicization. She believes that in stopping them, she is doing the right thing according to the Church and its head, as all of the integrity knights do. I don’t want to spoil anything else in the series so far so I will leave it at that.
A character you’re stunned isn’t more famous.
Jodie (Beyond: 2 Souls) – As a huge fan of Quantic Dream, I have no idea how Ellen Page’s “Jodie” is not more famous. We have come so far in character creation as far as 3D goes. Despite having a mixed reception, the game did go on to earn a few nominations so maybe Jodie is a little more famous than I thought! Whenever someone asks for interactive story recommendations, I make sure to recommend Heavy Rain and Beyond: 2 Souls that are two of my favorites!
A character from a piece of fiction you’re amazed isn’t more famous
Miku Hinasaki (Fatal Frame) – You fight ghosts with a camera?! Yes, yes you do. Miku should really be more famous, if not for her bravery and intelligence, but for Fatal Frame’s unique gaming mechanics and surreal story telling. One of the best horror game heroines will always be Miku Hinasaki.
Instead of nominations for this tag, I’m going to share some of my favorite lady bloggers since it is International Women’s Day! Please pay a visit to their sites and give a follow! If you want to take on this tag, please feel free to do so! I had so much fun with this one.

Nice list, but my Like is almost entirely for the presence of Project Zero/Fatal Frame and Final Fantasy X-2 and their respective heroines.
Have you played the whole Fatal Frame series? The continued development of Miku’s story throughout the third and fifth games is really interesting.

I have only played 1, 2, and 3! I really need to get my hands on the rest.

You do! They’re a great time. 4 is a mild faff to get running in English but there are full, clear instructions available online. There’s a link to them and the patch (and my coverage of the whole series from last year!) on this page: https://moegamer.net/all-games/project-zero-series/

Totally agree on Kairi and Haruhi, especially Kairi. And I’m really digging some of the game animations I’m seeing, especially Fatal Frame. Time to stalk.
I’m also wondering if you’ll notify us on your blog once your 500 Q&A video is uploaded. I’m anticipating your answers 😀

Thank you for adding me to your list Megan, and happy belated International Women’s Day! You’ve picked a brilliant bunch of ladies here; I love Asami Sato so much as a character and also feel her potential was overlooked quite a bit through the series until the end. More Asami is good Asami.

You’re very welcome Andria! Asami was definitely my favorite character of LoK. I wanted so much more of her!

That looked like a fun list to write. Some underrated fictional female characters in my opinion would be in no particular order…
Yomiko Readman from Read or Die
Shinesman Salmon Pink from Shinesman
Olga Elenova from Yugo the Negotiator
Zoe from Firefly
Elena from Street Fighter III
Lisbeth Salander from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (the Original, not the American remake version)
Reki from Haibane Renmei
Banke Adewumi from Lunch Time Heroes

Also, yes yes yes x1000 to Asami. She was SO underrated and had so much more potential as a character. This might be a minority opinion. but I definitely liked her character more than Korra’s and wished Asami was allowed to play more of a role than just being a love interest.

I definitely feel like her character got shoved into this hole of being a love interest when she could have been so much more. The writers definitely dropped the ball there.
