If you’re participating in The Nerdy Girlie’s 5 Fandom Friday, you may have noticed a few of us have made some DLC’s (downloadable content) to complement the already lengthy blog prompt list courtesy of The Nerdy Girlie and Super Space Chick. You can check out my first DLC for 5 Fandom Friday at the GG Pack (the Geeky Gal Pack) and my second DLC here at GG2 Pack!
With 2019 upon us, I noticed a lot of people want to learn a new skill or take up a new hobby as one of their resolutions. The Nerdy Girlie had a similar prompt so I thought I’d put the tiniest spin on it! I wanted to share 5 hobbies that I and my fellow geeky friends enjoy. These would be perfect hobbies to try out or even some cool skills you can learn for 2019.
Cross Stitch

I had tried cross stitching in the past, and I loved it! Unfortunately, it’s been years since I picked it back up, but after following technicolournurd on instagram for weight loss inspiration, I found myself falling in love with her cross stitch pieces! I hope to start back cross stitch myself this year so I’ve been looking over Etsy for some geeky cross stitch patterns. Cross stitchers: where do you find geeky patterns for newbies?

Model Building

I personally haven’t tried building models by hand, but as a 3D modeler, it does seem like this would be an amazing hobby. A good friend of mine nismoscats builds models in his down time from kits. His latest model is from Japan! You can find kits everywhere so pick one you like, and give it a shot.
Miniatures
I first found out about the art of miniatures when I started playing D&D with some friends. I had no idea that people would create their own characters, make them into models, have them 3D printed, then paint them! It sounds like such a cool idea. If you don’t have the skill to 3D model your character, you can buy bases that just need to be painted.
Trading Card Games
From Yu-Gi-Oh! to Pokemon to Magic the Gathering, there’s no shortage of card games that can be played in your group of geeky friends. I was never into trading card games myself until a few years ago when my husband got my brother and I into it. My brother had had some experience, but I was completely new to the whole thing. It was honestly a lot of fun and helped us all bond together. Not sure how to get started? Try some meet ups in your area or ask some of your friends if they’d like to give it a try.
What new geeky hobbies or skills are you planning on trying in 2019? Let me know in the comments!

I’m gonna primarily practice geekiness through writing, but I’ve always wanted to take up sewing. Maybe I should give that a try.

Sewing is definitely an invaluable skill to have. 🙂

Funny, I just started playing Magic the Gathering Arena a couple of weeks back and I am so enthralled with the game that I ha went been able to stop thinking about it. From the game itself to the extremely expansive and descriptive lore, I highly recommend trying it out!

Trading card games and cosplay are something I really want to get more into this year.

Two very good hobbies! Trading card games are even better if you have friends who already play some. ❤️

Cosplay is definitely something I think I could try more of this year, the others I feel would require rather more skill than I currently have though so I might have to save those for when I’m feeling particularly adventurous. I do like the idea of miniatures though.

I totally understand. Cosplay is definitely a hobby you can pick up without skills. I can’t sew for the life of me so I buy my cosplays.

I used to love cross stitch when I was younger but now my hands aren’t up for intricate tasks like that sadly. Crafty wise I’m planning to work on my art again this year as well as calligraphy and typography alongside my gaming bullet journal.
I love to collect trading cards for the art but I have absolutely zero patience for actually playing them 😀 I have a large collection of the old World of Warcraft game and my fiancé is a long time Magic the Gathering player.

I think those are great craft goals! I’ve always loved seeing bullet journals but haven’t tried to do one myself.

These are some great ideas. My mum loves cross stitch and my dad is big into fantasy and military modelling. Cosplay is something I’ve done before and would love to do more of – we’re planning a steam punk family costume for LFCC this year.
