For the month of October, I am pulling away from my regular 5 Fandom Friday and Saturday Suggestion posts. Every Friday for the month of October I will be presenting my 5 Freaky Faves in honor of Halloween! This week’s 5 Freaky Faves are my all time favorite horror anime (which you may have seen during the 30 Day Anime Challenge).
Ghost Hunt
Ghost Hunt is an anime adapted from a Japanese light novel series of a similar name. It is “incomplete,” but there is speculation it will continue. Regardless that the anime is only one season, it was definitely a great one, and I cannot wait to see more if they wish to continue. It really didn’t leave us on a cliff hanger so I see no reason not to give it a shot if you’re wary about it being “incomplete.”
Our story is all about the Shibuya Psychic Research center. It’s managed by 17-year-old Kazuya Shibuya, or Naru, as our main character Mai likes to call him. They are a paranormal investigation team, and here’s where things get even more awesome. The characters accompanying Mai and Naru have thier own talents and ways of dealing with the supernatural: Buddhist monk Houshou Takigawa (Monk); shrine maiden Ayako Matsuzaki; celebrity psychic Masako Hara; and Catholic priest John Brown. Mai and Naru are seemingly without these talents but with help from Naru’s assistant Lin, they solve each case thrown their way, whether the case is actually paranormal or not. — A Geeky Gal
Black Butler
Black Butler, also known as Kuroshitsuji, is an anime adapted from the original manga Black Butler. The story follows 12-year-old Ciel Phantomhive, head of a noble family and owner of a toy manufacturing company. He has formed a contract with the demon Sebastian Michaelis, the ever good-looking, loyal, and devoted butler to Ciel. The anime is cloaked in dark humor and mystery. Not to mention Sebastian is so cool and on top of things he makes you look like a lazy slob. The slew of supportive characters bring in a little light in this dark anime. They make us laugh, they make us cry, and most importantly, they make us wish we had a hot butler like Sebastian.
Our story lies during Queen Victoria’s reign in London. In the Phantomhive estate, a terrible tragedy takes place. Ten-year-old Ciel’s parents are brutally murdered, his mansion becomes engulfed by flames, and he is captured and tortured by a mysterious organization. When he finally returns to his estate, he brings along a tall, dark, and handsome butler, Sebastian. No one knows the truth behind Ciel’s newly acquired butler. Ciel made a deal with Sebastian, a demon from the underworld, that Sebastian would help him get revenge against the mysterious organization that killed his parents and tortured him. Sebastian appears to everyone else as a loyal and more-than-capable butler. Ciel is the Queen’s “Watchdog” and solves crimes that plague London (with help of Sebastian of course) until he can exact his revenge. — A Geeky Gal
Hell Girl
Hell Girl will ferry your enemy straight to hell… for a price.
Ai Enma (Hell Girl) doesn’t pass judgement. She simply exacts your revenge for you. Simply go to Hell Correspondence, a website that is only accessible at midnight, then type in the name of the person you want dragged to hell. Ai Enma takes care of it for you. She only asks for one thing: you must condemn yourself to an afterlife in hell after she’s carried out the deed.
Hell Girl the anime is very episodic, and that may be a turn off to many anime watchers. But not me! Hell Girl is definitely in the horror genre, and the art is amazing even if you find the story lacking. I personally don’t find the story boring at all. In fact, I find that Ai Enma (Hell Girl) is an amazing villain… or hero? It all depends on who you ask. — A Geeky Gal
Attack on Titan
Humans now live in fear of giant humanoid monsters called titans. Titans have nearly drove humanity into extinction because of their love of eating human flesh. For future humans to survive, giant impenetrable walls were built around their city to keep the titans out. The peace of 100 years inside the walls end when a colossal titan attacks the city, breaking the outermost wall, re-igniting the fear the humans have for the titans and their fight for survival.
We meet Eren Yeager who has suffered an incredible personal loss to the titans. He has vowed to eradicate them all and joins the Survey Corps, an elite military group that fights titans outside the walls of the city. He is joined by his adopted sister and best friend as they try to find a way to defeat the titans before they breach the last wall of the city. — A Geeky Gal
High School of the Dead
When the dead began to rise in Tokyo, it happened faster than anyone could expect. When the undead reached Takashi Kimuro’s high school, he did something he would have never thought he would have to do. He had to kill his best friend who was bitten. Takashi and his best friend’s girlfriend, Rei Miyamoto, attempt to make their way out of the school.
Along the way, Takashi and Rei are joined by others from their school: Saeko Busujima, the president of the Kendo Club; Kouta Hirano, an otaku with a fetish for firearms; Saya Takagi, the daughter of a politician; and Shizuka Marikawa, their school nurse. Together they escape the school only to find that the rest of the city has already taken. They decide to find their family members and hope to uncover what has caused the zombie apocalypse. — A Geeky Gal

Cool list. I can watch High School of the Day any month of the year. And I love how creepy the Titans are in Attack on Titan. Apparently, Hajime Isayama based them off a belligerent drunk in a cybercafe.

Fantastic list. Great to see Black Butler on it and I’m really happy Ghost Hunt got a mention as it feel like it gets overlooked a lot.

I watched Ghost Hunt on a whim one night and just thought it was fantastic. I wish we would get a second season.

YES. ATTACK ON TITAN. ALL THE YES. I’m so behind on it, GAH. But also, Tokyo Ghoul is a good one probably to watch during the creepy times. Or Death Note. There’s always Death Note to make you feel like an evil POS.

Death Note is a great one to go on this list! I haven’t watched Tokyo Ghoul yet but I’ve heard great things about it.

Ooh, yes I love Black Butler. I’ve never seen Ghost Hunt but it looks really cool I’ll have to look it up. Great list!
My favourite scary anime is Shiki, although it did kinda disturb me. A much lighter horror/supernatural anime I really enjoyed was Occult Academy.

It’s a great film. I recommend that and the other works from Satoshi Kon.
