I’ve never really enjoyed anime with a ton of fan service. Sure, sometimes it’s funny, but it’s almost never crucial to the actually plot. When I was introduced to High School of the Dead, I truly didn’t believe I’d watch it past the first episode despite it being a classic zombie horror anime. Something about big butts and bouncing boobs didn’t exactly sound like my type of anime. I was wrong.
When the dead began to rise in Tokyo, it happened faster than anyone could expect. When the undead reached Takashi Kimuro’s high school, he did something he would have never thought he would have to do. He had to kill his best friend who was bitten. Takashi and his best friend’s girlfriend, Rei Miyamoto, attempt to make their way out of the school.
Along the way, Takashi and Rei are joined by others from their school: Saeko Busujima, the president of the Kendo Club; Kouta Hirano, an otaku with a fetish for firearms; Saya Takagi, the daughter of a politician; and Shizuka Marikawa, their school nurse. Together they escape the school only to find that the rest of the city has already taken. They decide to find their family members and hope to uncover what has caused the zombie apocalypse.
If you watch HOTD (High School of the Dead) expecting an intricate plot and beautiful character development, you’re gonna have a bad time. This anime is about boobs and killing zombies. That being said, the artwork is quite good. Our characters get more than one outfit. The animation is A+. The art is overall clean and has great use of color.
Aside from boobs, we get a lot of great action scenes, suspense, and comedic relief… from Kouta, our personal MacGyver. There’s even some romance for fans like myself. HOTD is overall a simple anime about boobs and zombies but is overall fun and enjoyable to watch.
