VGC Day 1: What was your very first video game?

About 20 years ago, I was 5 years old in Gulf Shores celebrating Christmas with my mom and grandma. I awoke to a big box in the middle of our beach rental home’s living room. After opening my Pokemon cards with a sweet note from Santa, I finally asked about the big box. My mom was really excited for me to tear into it, and I was just excited over how big it seemed. At the bottom of the giant box was a PlayStation with two controllers and two video games: Spyro the Dragon and Frogger.

Absolutely beside myself with joy, my mom and grandma set up the PlayStation and gathered around while I put in Spyro. I had played a little bit of Mortal Kombat and Sonic the Hedgehog on Sega Genesis, but watching the screen fill with that purple dragon and all his glory was something I couldn’t forget. My mom and grandma took turns playing and my little heart was so full and amazed.

Later that day, we took turns playing against each other in Frogger. The top down game was different than anything I had played before, but it didn’t compare to the world of Spyro the Dragon. I played and played Spyro until my thumbs hurt. I played and played until I finally beat it. What a bittersweet feeling it was to beat the game that opened my eyes to gaming and becoming a gamer.

Years later, I sat down to play Spyro again, this time on my PlayStation 3. I played and played and played… until I beat it again. This time at 100% completion. The same bittersweet feeling came over me, but also a sense of accomplishment. I had beaten my first childhood game at 100%.

Spyro will forever hold a special place in my heart. It made me into a gamer; it made me want to go into gaming as a career. It took me to another world when I needed to get away; it challenged me in ways I didn’t expect. Here’s to you Spyro. May we see you again soon!

  1. I used to love Spyro. You’ve made me want to dig out my old PlayStation and take it for a spin. I can’t remember the first game I ever played, but I was completely glued to my game boy when I was a child so Zelda was probably the thinh that kick started a love of gaming.

  2. Awesome! I have never played Spyro to this day but I have always wanted to play! It’s awesome that you have so many fond memories with the game. I’ve played many games so I don’t quite remember my very first game, but I remember the first video game that was ALL MINE and not one purchased for me and my brother. It was Snowboard Kids 2 and I received on my birthday one day. The game was for the Nintendo 64 and I played that game so much!

Also, I have nominated you for the Liebster Blog Award! You can check out the post by clicking the link below. Have a great day!

  3. Hard to say what my first video game was. We had a console when I was 3 or 4 and I remember nothing about it. After that it was probably Super Mario Brothers on the NES. That was fun. Shame the princess was always in another bloomin castle!

      1. am really wanting to get the SNES mini type thing that came out recently, though I cant really stretch to it just now, but it has most of my favourite SNES games on it, including Legend of Zelda and Starfox. Super Mario World, I never had but I did borrow and enjoy, Mega Man, which I loved on other consoles and Kirby which was a gameboy favourite is also included Soon, when I have more money. Soon.

  4. It’s hard to remember which one I played first, so I claim three video games as my firsts. Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Super Mario Bros, and Kirby’s Adventure. Kirby is the first game I ever beat, and I still remember the thrill of finally getting good enough to take down the final boss.

I still to this day don’t think I’ve ever beaten World 8-4 to win Super Mario Bros. I should give that another try.

    1. Beating your first game will always hold a special place in your heart. ❤

I love to revisit some of my old favorite games. You may find you beat the level very quickly, and other levels that were easy are now more difficult! With Spyro, I had the hardest time with the Flight levels. As an adult, most of them were pretty easy to beat on the first try.

  5. My very first video game was Super Mario Bros on the NES. I was in diapers when this game released and I remember sneaking to the console every night when my mom was asleep and playing this game until I fell asleep :).
