Saturday Suggestion – Anime: Black Butler

Black Butler, also known as Kuroshitsuji, is an anime adapted from the original manga Black Butler. The story follows 12-year-old Ciel Phantomhive, head of a noble family and owner of a toy manufacturing company. He has formed a contract with the demon Sebastian Michaelis, the ever good-looking, loyal, and devoted butler to Ciel. The anime is cloaked in dark humor and mystery. Not to mention Sebastian is so cool and on top of things that he makes you look like a lazy slob. The slew of supportive characters bring in a little light in this dark anime. They make us laugh, they make us cry, and most importantly, wish we had a hot butler like Sebastian.

Brief intro: Our story lies during Queen Victoria’s reign in London. In the Phantomhive estate, a terrible tragedy takes place. Ten-year-old Ciel’s parents are brutally murdered, his mansion becomes engulfed by flames, and he is captured and tortured by a mysterious organization. When he finally returns to his estate, he brings along a tall, dark, and handsome butler, Sebastian. No one knows the truth behind Ciel’s newly acquired butler. Ciel made a deal with Sebastian, a demon from the underworld, that Sebastian would help him get revenge against the mysterious organization that killed his parents and tortured him. Sebastian appears to everyone else as a loyal and more-than-capable butler. Ciel is the Queen’s “Watchdog” and solves crimes that plague London (with help of Sebastian of course) until he can exact his revenge.

Review: There are so many twists and turns in Black Butler. You think you know what’s going to happen and then you’re dead wrong. It’ll have you on the edge of your seat with the epic fight scenes, laughing until you cry because, yes, the characters are that insane, and drooling over the epic-ness that is Sebastian Michaelis. If you can’t find another reason to watch Black Butler, do it for Sebastian.

This anime is dark and will put you deep into London’s underworld of drugs and murder. You won’t know who to trust. Even those closest to Ciel have a target on their backs thanks to Sebastian’s protectiveness. Ciel is so ruthless and so egotistical it’s almost funny. The Phantomive name is known for eradicating wrong-doings in that of the royal name in ways that would seem terrible and even downright evil. But he is the Queen’s Watchdog after all.

For those of you who don’t normally watch anime, I don’t recommend Black Butler for starting out. It’s known as a shotacon anime, in that it centers around a young boy and an older partner. While the anime has no sex scenes, only suggestive ones, Sebastian and Ciel’s strange relationship is constantly being poked at and made fun of, though they never outright say if there is something between them, rather a constant push-pull fight for power. Who is in charge exactly?

The art is amazing and well-done. There is always room for silly shenanigans though that makes our characters larger than life and comical. The food described is really awesome. Most episodes start off with Sebastian bringing food and tea to his master, Ciel. The descriptions are phenomenal and make your tummy growl.

In short, Black Butler is dark, mysterious, but comical and witty. If you’re a seasoned anime-watcher, Black Butler needs to be on your watch list.
